Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is removing a legacy Windows feature, WMIC, that has been around for 25 yearsEnglish
1·4 hours agonever even heard of wmic. looked it up and it’s just been superseded by a new tool. this is barely even news, but neowin had to title the article like it’s a big deal.
not even particularly confusing, it’s just two inexperienced users being inexperienced. it seems like it’s only confusing people that know OpenOffice and LibreOffice have OS X versions but somehow don’t know that not everyone knows what they’re doing.
you’re right, but i need people to understand that this is simply not a workable solution for most people. the simple fact is if we want the average person to adopt more open source alternatives, it needs to improve usability even without their help. it’s not really enough to only cater to us power user nerds with “good enough,” and it doesn’t win hearts and minds to handwave complaints and tell people to come back with a patch.
when i say “red grapes,” i’m always referring to the ones that are actually red because they have the most satisfying snap when you eat them.
two examples: white wine, white grape juice. both are very common. seems to refer to the juice color, not the color of the grape skins.
when they’re made into raisins, they’re called golden raisins. so “white” isn’t even the only one.

Technology@lemmy.world•Some Claude users are mad that Anthropic’s new watermarks will catch them using it at their jobs, classesEnglish
9·3 days agoall of them are just admitting that they’re embarrassed about using AI instead of their own brains. of course, they don’t know that because claude never told them.
i’ve never had an original thought in my life.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Drop your unpopular opinions here because c/unpopularopinions is filled with popular opinions
1·5 days agothe only thing i don’t like about this internet debate is the people who think they have super elite ball knowledge about salty+sweet being good. everyone knows about salty+sweet, i love all sorts of salty+sweet things, i just do not like hot pineapple and think it makes the texture weird on pizza.
my weird pizza topping that i love is cashews. i’ve gotten a lot of “ewww!” responses to that, which i find so fuckin weird because they’re not exactly known for having a strong flavor.

2·5 days agoto be fair, even hacker news users still sometimes say AI generated text can be spotted by emdashes even though that hasn’t been true for a long time, and those folks trend far qualified to comment than most public social media. same with generating hands, but i really only see that one on places like reddit. it’s not contained to lemmy, is my point.
the term usually also implies you don’t want the foil to touch the food. i stick toothpicks in there for the foil to rest on if it doesn’t wanna work well on its own.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that one company owns Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, Match.com and at least 40 more dating sites/appsEnglish
46·7 days agoand reminder, these places make more money if you don’t find a match. they are actively disincentivized from doing their stated job.
same is true for companies like incogni. if mass data harvesting is made illegal, they’re out of a job. and many of them are owned by companies that also own data brokers. the removal process is often just sending your data to a data broker and asking if they have it, which obviously just hands that data right over in the process. they will make more money from data harvesting staying legal and they know it.

this is legitimately what i think is happening. both with github’s constant outages and windows 11 seeming to be getting worse faster than ever before. a fucking gigabyte of ram for a weather app, a beginner programming project, built like an electron app because i guess copilot doesn’t know c#.
