afaik edgeworth was originally meant to be an older prosecutor but the character designer intentionally pushed to make him younger to pair well with Wright.

The English localisation and translation team are given a lot of creative license with these games, so much of the humour in the English language versions is their own. The localisation director, Janet Hsu, is often the one who comes up with the iconic puns and dad jokes.
