Is this a town / city in which the various nightclubs, hotels and such around the world are actually more famous than the town / city itself?
I think that’s a good way of putting it. Apparently, there are at least six places called “Copacabana” around the world. This is the original one and derives from an Aymara phrase meaning “view of the lake.” Almost all other locations trace their name back to the Bolivian town via devotion to the Virgin of Copacabana … as per what Wikipedia and Wikitravel tell me
