      The trend is fundamentally rooted in functionality. It makes the street cooler during hotter periods with intense sun. Since its invention it has spread enough to potentially also merely be fashionable decoration though

        it’s fascinating to me that the Bolivians call them paraguas – i learned to call them parasols, which directly confirms your description since para sol literally means “stop sun”. lol

          Paraguas is of course also Para Agua - stop water.

          I’m more used to parasol being used for the larger variants commonly seen at the beach, but often they can be somewhat interchangeable in function - what stops water is also likely reasonable at stopping sun

      yeah it’s called la calle de los paraguas next to the witch’s market…I suppose they provide a modicum of shelter as well ☺️
