Don’t chose American tech. Don’t choose European tech. Don’t choose Chinese tech.
The country/continent of origin is irrelevant. You’re still vulnerable to spyware either way.
Choose Open Source tech.
FOSS is the way to go wherever possible but hosting your own email is honesty absurd at this point. I know some people do it but for regular mortals it’s not remotely an option.
Absolutely. If you have an android phone, i’d always recommend ditching the google play store where possible and using F-Droid instead.
There is a whole community of people dedicated to the hobby of self-hosting. Email, Drive, VPN, you name it. Sounds like more effort than it’s worth, especially when companies like Proton exist.
ProtonMail is headed up by a CEO willing to tow the MAGA line when expedient, and then retreat from it and claim it was misinterpreted when called out on it.

This is probably not the service you want to be using if you want to avoid the mad king in orange.
I’ll be honest, the story was so skewed I’m almost convinced it’s paid anti-privacy propaganda.
Guy is consistently anti-Trump, donates to left wing causes and did so for many years, but has 1 tweet that “appeared to favor” the Republican party (which he made clear was not the intent), so he’s apparently MAGA now. It’s hilarious.
Somehow doing hundreds anti-Republican things and sharing 1 opinion that “appeared” to be pro-Republican (and clarifying it was not!!) makes someone’s MAGA.
If that’s the threshold then given everything else he’s doing he might as well be the “leader of Antifa”.
I’ve been using Tutamail for over a year now and I can definitely recommend it. It’s Germany based, the company works more like a coop, and they care a lot about fairness/equality/sustainability.
I mean the apps are open source no? ‘All Proton apps are open source and have been independently audited and verified by third-party experts. Anyone can see and verify that our apps do what we claim.’
This whole thing seams shady at best. I was considering proton but will move on to other options. If the CEO openly expresses him this way it means that the company got his back and he trusts they are there. It’s not a coincidence. The cats out of the bag.
What’s out of the bag? His projects with Lina Khan? His donations to “woke” left wing causes? His anti-Trump statements?
Oh the one anti-big tech tweet that can be misconstrued as being pro-Republican. No then everything else doesn’t matter, that’s the only thing that determines his political affiliation.
Also please ignore he clarified what he meant and nobody arguing in good faith would keep claiming that 1 Tweet was pro-Trump, let alone the guy is.
For anyone reading that doesn’t know the story: Trump appointed an anti-big tech person to lead an anti-trust department (probably by accident), proving even a broken clock is right once. Proton CEO tweeted he liked the appointment, because of course the Proton CEO is anti-big tech. Then everyone started saying it somehow makes the Proton CEO MAGA, despite him being consistently anti-MAGA.
Anyhoo, there are other alternatives where we don’t have to have these discussions or thoughts of who meant what.
I’d rather go with them and have peace of mind. Thanks.
I just moved everything to proton 🤧 so I pray this is okay for now. Im not paying them anyway so idk lol whats a good alt?
There are other ones, but proton was the one that resembled google the most. Sucks. Hope you’re right
Vivaldi is still Chrome under the hood
And it’s not even open source. I don’t trust it, just use Firefox (or a fork of the latter)
Yeah but it offers so much more control and features than vanilla Chrome and it does not ping back to the mothership.
Don’t listen to the haters, kids. Vivaldi rocks.
I don’t like the usage of Chromium in general, but it is open-source, so I don’t think the usage of it is necessarily a dealbreaker, considering it’s not the same as using Chrome. As far as I am aware, Vivaldi is not fully open-source, but generally has a good reputation.
Its unrealistic for Vivaldi to implement their own engine, and gecko is noticably slower.
*choose open source tech
Otherwise we’re just swapping corporate abusers for new ones.
I still remember how redditors on some european subs argued that we need “European alternative for Palantir”. Can’t make this up.
Dude, WHAT
Qwant has been blocking access from countries that have non-European languages as their official language since around 2020.
It is still not available in Japan and other countries.
I recommend using Stract and Mojeek, which builds its own index independently without relying on Bing or similar services.
EDIT: Add mojeek.
I really fucking hope that this Munich security conference isn’t our time’s “Munich Agreement”.
Just made this and your other post my Signal and WhatsApp story. Ironic, I know—both of those are American…
Perfect is the enemy of the good, you have to start somewhere!
That’s one of my favourite aphorisms! You’re very right.
