Firefox says it will keep supporting uBlock Origin even as Microsoft Edge and other Chromium browsers phase it out under Manifest V3.

Not entirely correct. When we look at engines there are Blink, gecko and webkit. Unless you also count Ladybird’s engine I guess.

Yes Blink is a webkit fork but it has been separate for a good while.

Isn’t it crazy that Safari and thereby also Chrome/Chromium are at the heart based on work by KDE for its Konqueror?

Safari? Yes, it is most definitely a major browser, if anything Firefox isn’t one. So if we don’t count Firefox, then it would be only two indeed.

PS: Everything on an iPhone is forced to use webkit btw, so even Chrome is webkit on an iPhone. There are a lot of iOS users out there.

And if you’ve ever wondered why Apple has the WebKit restriction…

“Ensuring other browsers are not able to compete fairly is critical to Apple’s best and easiest revenue stream,” the OWA says. The group notes that Safari brings in $20 billion per year in search engine revenue from Google, accounting for 14-16 percent of Apple’s annual operating profit, and that it’s set to lose $200 million per year for every 1 percent of browser market share that Safari loses.

Big money at stake. It’s wild.

The browser doesn’t really get heavy usage on a phone. If we’re just counting install base you have to add IE back on the list.

              This is not true.

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers

According to StatCounter web use statistics (a proxy for all use), in the week from 7–13 November 2016, “mobile” (meaning smartphones) alone (without tablets) overtook desktop for the first time and by the end of the year smartphones were in the majority. Since 27 October, the desktop has not shown a majority, even on weekdays.
