Modern filesystems like ZFS have snapshots and the ability to incrementally copy those around even over the network. I’d suggest considering using those instead of something that operates on top of the filesystem.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hard drive prices have surged by an average of 46% since September — iconic 24TB Seagate BarraCuda now $500 as AI claims another victimEnglish
21·5 days agoif you are looking this from the US that is not necessarily the only thing that could be driving prices up though. You’ve got tariffs and a much weaker dollar than it used to be right now…

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•Lemmy now (partially) federates with Bluesky via Bridgyfed
1·7 days agoIt seems like this is going to be extremely limited when it comes to what can be seen from the Bluesky side unless there’s either a way for Lemmy users to enable the bridge and many of them do it or the default policy of opt-in is changed for Lemmy instances.
IIRC there is a way to set the bridge to be enabled by default at the instance level so if Lemmy users were ok with that and instance admins decided to do it then that would result in this being much more useful.
Well they’re saying despite there being a light sensor it still can be easily circumvented by also covering the camera, not the LED, with your hand when starting to record and then just moving your hand away from the camera once the glasses are recording. I’ve definitely seen this tip shared and I think even an video of it in action.
They probably realize there’s no airtight way to prevent it anyway so they’ve added just some simple ways to make it a bit more difficult. It’s not like you couldn’t get camera glasses from some other company without these restrictions anyway if you’re determined to record without the light.
Having seen what people now accept I would not want to bet that these will fail. Never thought people would be OK with Google using their phone to record their exact location 24/7 and save a searchable history of it for example but it seems that never was even controversial. Same with phones and other dedicated little devices that are always listening…

Technology@lemmy.world•Stewart Cheifet, creator of The Computer Chronicles, dead at 87English
10·21 days agoVery sorry to hear that, a legend has passed. Just watched LGR’s react to the Computer Chronicles 1987 Christmas Episode the other day… I may need to schedule a Computer Chronicles marathon soon in light of this news.

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•Lemmy Federation Is Useless If Communities Aren’t Really Decentralized
2·23 days agodecentralization doesn’t have a particularly specific meaning. Federation absolutely qualifies for having a certain degree of it. You can be more or less decentralized ranging from completely monolithic to fully p2p. Then there are related properties like the ability to migrate or anonymity.
well that may be true for general news but if you’re looking for a more specific topic it won’t necessarily hold.
thanks, that’s interesting to see… I wouldn’t say that what we mean by Loops now has been around for that long but it does show he has been thinking about shortform video for a while and used the same name as the experimental feature had.
where are you getting the idea that Loops is five years old? Seems more like less than two years. From what I can tell it was publicly announced March 2024 (not yet available at that point): https://wedistribute.org/2024/03/loops-by-pixelfed/
In October 2024 it was starting to accept limited signups. The git repo has commits dating back to December 2024.
Federation for it is definitely still a WIP but I don’t see much reason to doubt that it will be a fediverse platform.
You don’t because everything here’s based on communities while Mastodon is on individual users. If you’d like something that does both in a single platform I think Mbin would be the best bet (although you can interact with Lemmy communities using Mastodon and other microblogging platforms to some extent)

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Looking for Software to Track Watched ShowsEnglish
5·1 month agoAnother vote for NeoDB. It’s been very useful for me and more people on fedi need to know about it.

Well there’s software that can make it easier. Just an option. For ZFS specifically there’s zfs_autobackup which I’ve got experience with and I haven’t tried this but just found out about a Web UI that works with it: https://github.com/natankeddem/bale
