I would love to agree, but I think this falls into hindsight being 20/20.

For myself, I eat meat. However, I can easily imagine a world where that would be considered ethically horrible. I believe it was punishable by death in Japan for like 1000 years in the past. However, I was raised to eat meat, and honestly don’t see a problem with it. I’m sure I would feel different if raised differently.

When we say “I would hold my same morals regardless,” I think we may be giving ourselves too much credit… Or not giving enough credit to those who lived in the past.

I know this is just a joke, but art should have a difficulty slider when possible if it will require active participation by the audience. Otherwise, it is just excluding people and essentially gatekeeping. Even art house movies and have subtitles, and music is often translated to text or sign.

I thought the reason people side with Depp is because there are recordings of Heard mocking him for reporting abuse and admitting to hitting him, that he initiated the split, and that she gave an op-ed that suggested he was the sole abuser.

Typically there is a primary abuser and often a retaliatory abuser. What is in question is which is which. The concern is that people who side with Depp often do so because of their own beliefs in women being toxic. However, people who side with Heard do essentially the same. I don’t believe a clear picture of Depp being primarily abuser has been established, but would be interested if you had that information.

Edit: also, I’m not on either of their sides. That’s one of those situations where I look at it and slowly back away. I’ll leave it to people who actually know them/have more information.

I … Don’t believe you are correct here. The US has the most destructive military (non-nuclear) on the planet. The country simply does not have the appetite to actually commit blood, sweat, and money to this war. If they start striking the US, the US people will see it as an existential threat and be far more willing to dedicate as many resources as nessesary to eliminating the threat regardless of the fact that the US started it. That would be bad for everyone, but especially Iran.

It is far better to have the US population largely split in their support for the war effort.

Huh, I always thought the Simpsons contrasted the US national projection of a mostly flat “middle class” society against the strict reality of its own socioeconomic classes. Simpsons being lower middle class (what I offhanded called poor), families like the Flanders being solidly middle class, and families like Dr. Hibbert being upper middle class. This was further contrasted through the display of Mr. Burns being very clearly wealthy.

My point was that the Simpsons live a life that is no longer achievable even by the average “upper middle class” family. A doctor may be able to support three kids and a stay at home spouse while owning two cars and a home, but not in most parts of the country.

That said, I was a kid when I watched those episodes, so I’ll have to look again.

And to my original point, most managers are not making an income that gives them upward or even lateral mobility. They are mostly just trying to avoid getting fired. Add in that HR has most actual power, and hides behind the front facing manager (who has no actual power), and you have a shell game of authority and responsibility that supports keeping everyone “under control.”

Do y’all really think managers make “big bucks”? Don’t get me wrong, most management is living the 90’s middle class life in 2026. But when did that become aspirational?

I still remember the Simpsons being the representation of a poor family. Now they are high class. That shit is not managers fault. Most managers are just working to not lose what they have while supporting their people as much as they can.
