3·5 days agoUnfortunately the USA does not refine its own oil. It sells it and imports and refines foreign oil. Changing or replacing oil refineries stateside to refine domestic crude would take billions of dollars and years to construct.

Technology@lemmy.world•Most new U.S. AI data centers are being built in drought zones — two-thirds of 809 planned projects set for areas with water shortagesEnglish
1·6 days agoAbsolutely not. The US creates war through coups, military intervention, and puppet states.
Left to their own devices, many states would have socialist governments that focus on their quality of life, whereas the empire is purely extractive.
Currently the US is going after several Latin American governments. These states would be better off without US interference. This is just a fact.

Technology@lemmy.world•How Pokémon Go players unknowingly trained military drones: ‘I was just playing a game’English
49·6 days agoPokémon Go’s parent company, Niatic received money from the CIA’s In-Q-Tel investment subsidiary. The Israeli military banned the game on bases when it was released. It was always a security hazard. Now it’s too late to do anything about it.

7·7 days agoI’d like to think everyone gets the worst of all worlds. Data centers get the water and cause mass migration. The rich fail to manifest Skynet and go broke, then spur on a civil war in a fight amongst each other for fiefdoms.

8·7 days agoThat sounds like a metaphor for oil and capitalism (industrial society), which data centers are a product of. Good reference. Maybe I’ll check out that game in the future.

Technology@lemmy.world•US asks China to resume rare-earth exports to JapanEnglish
26·7 days agoThe Japanese did this to themselves by speaking out against the only refiner of several rare earth metals.
Their nation depends on peace with China and they are now realizing they voted for the wrong politician, because this lady trying to remilitarize Japan reminded the Chinese of all the war crimes done to Chinese people under Japanese occupation. Completely expected development based on simple facts.
My guess is Japan will have to make some concessions with the Chinese to reach a deal or they risk losing a sector of their economy.

Technology@lemmy.world•Man jailed for a month despite Flock showing he was 5 miles from crime sceneEnglish
14·8 days agoIn theory the police want to investigate crime and eliminate suspects, but in practice they give up after making an arrest. The access to new technology or information change nothing about this practice.
This is why it’s important to curb these kinds of dystopian surveillance systems in the first place. They change nothing and give reach for further unwarranted intrusions into the lives of citizens. This has been seen as cops using these systems to stalk people.

19·14 days agoThey basically have to improve their filtration on pornography content. That’s my guess.

The Metaverse was a true supervillain plan that makes one wonder about his sanity.
He and the Google guys are some of the richest data brokers in the world, but he’s the only one who openly hates the people who made him his fortune and let’s them know by asking them to train their AI replacement. Real misanthropic and mean spirited management strategy.
