Privacy@lemmy.ml•would you wait for the Grapheneos-Motorola phone or buy a new pixel now?English
2·4 days agoDepends heavily on the country. Most used phones in Sweden are sold at MSRP, sometimes even more expensive. Recycling and second hand is very popular, even clothes are more expensive than if you were buying new in stores. It’s just not worth it economically, it’s only worth it if you’re doing it for ideological or moral reasons (e.g. sustainability).

Privacy@lemmy.ml•would you wait for the Grapheneos-Motorola phone or buy a new pixel now?English
6·4 days agoI’m waiting. Not only because I’d rather use Motorola over Google, but also because I want to wait and see how the EU ID apps will work on GrapheneOS. If it won’t work on GOS (which seems quite likely as of today), then I will ditch the phone as a social medium entirely and only use it for ID, banking apps and other proprietary garbage society forces upon me. I’d relegate my social life to a portable laptop or something, on which I have a far greater control of the software.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would you use a website that required a browser extension to uphold end-to-end encryption of user content?English
11·4 days agoThat’s true. On the other hand, the extension gains a much larger attack surface since it has access to a lot more data (every site you visit vs. only the site that serves the JS code). At the end of the day, people wouldn’t use your site if they didn’t trust your site, especially if they use it for privacy and integrity reasons, so for most users I think JS is the better option. I suppose there’s no reason you can’t offer both though.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would you use a website that required a browser extension to uphold end-to-end encryption of user content?English
13·4 days agoIs their JS code open source? If so, I don’t see any real differences between an extension and JS code. Unless extensions have less privileges or something. The user will have to either trust the code or inspect it themselves regardless if it’s an extension or JS code.

1·4 days agoUpdate: Yamtrack is great, thanks for the suggestion! I haven’t gotten the webhook to work yet though but I haven’t had much time to troubleshoot.

Games@lemmy.world•Epic Games Store will get a Linux version sometime "soon"English
3·4 days agoThey refused my refund request for Rust when they pulled Linux support. This was a few years ago though so maybe they’ve changed policies since.
In Sweden they can (and do). The police here take about 55 000 blood and urine samples per year for drug use convictions. It’s awful.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•E2EE cloud storage providers with FOSS clients?English
2·1 month agoI guess we value privacy and integrity differently. I consider all of my personal data sensitive.

2·1 month agoIsn’t it easier to come up with a way to share the passphrase or key file for the encrypted photos in the case of your death? Don’t get me wrong though, there are many pros to unencrypted photos, but the con of having them leaked to the internet in case the server(s) are compromised weighs far heavier than the pros unfortunately. At least when it comes to hosting them on a VPS.

4·1 month agoIf that were true, TLS/HTTPS would count as E2EE. I don’t think your definition is correct, but I could of course be wrong. But yes, I want client side encryption.
But thanks, I’ll think about it.

1·1 month agoI definitely don’t mind paying, in fact I prefer it. The service being free was never a requirement from my side. Can you recommend some alternatives?

3·1 month agoDon’t put your Keepass on a remote server!
Why not? It’s encrypted.
IDK if that would count as E2EE
It doesn’t.

2·1 month agoTheir Android client isn’t on F-Droid and their repository for the Android client is super weird: https://github.com/FilenCloudDienste/filen-ts
There’s not even a file declaring the license, nor any APK releases to download so it seems like you can’t get it outside of the Google Play store.

2·1 month agoAt rest disk encryption is super easy to set up, but that’s different from E2EE. Key management and encryption should happen client side.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•E2EE cloud storage providers with FOSS clients?English
3·1 month agoSure, but as far as I can tell its E2EE implementation is subpar. There are ton of providers that offer NC hosting, including Hetzner, but my main concern is encryption. Do you have any experience with it?

Even though programming and IT is a great hobby of mine, I ultimately decided not to pursue it on a university level as I didn’t want to potentially turn my hobby into something I despise. I’ve been regretting this decision a lot throughout my life, but as AI becomes more and more incorporated into the work life of a programmer, I’m starting to feel relief. I would not want to work in that field today.
