A Lemmy account can only communicate with individual accounts if they write something in a community. This is the case with all content (posts + replies) on Mastodon, as it appears separately in the timeline. In this case, it has nothing to do with Lemmy.

This is a really good introductory video that explains the Fediverse. Very clear, good examples and for a target group with no prior knowledge. So if you want to recommend other people to join the Fediverse, this might be a good start. There are insights into Mastodon and Pixelfed in particular… but Lemmy is also a topic in the video… (Thank you @thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee !)

It would make things a lot easier if you were supported in advance in deciding which platform / software is best suited. At the moment, many people don’t even realise that they have a choice and they often start with Mastodon because that’s all they know. For some, it does fit, but many are not actually looking for a Twitter clone and not just microblogging and are then disappointed or confused.

I had once made drafts for a kind of “FediChooser” (alluding to Distrochooser), which, after answering a few questions about needs, expectations, experiences, gives one or more recommendations which platform would subjectively fit best for you.

I don’t know how big the dependency is and what the internal structures are like. I only remember that 2-3 years ago there was a message from him saying that he had some kind of burn-out and therefore needed a break of several months.
