1·5 days agoDon’t know about this one specifically, but from hearing about spacecraft updates in general… there is generally a ‘safe mode’ that gets rebooted into when unknown faults happen (such as a watchdog timing out), and which does almost nothing besides talk to home (by the most reliable and slowest method possible), do hardware diagnostics, and keep the thing from freezing. And, naturally, accept firmware updates.

1·5 days agoHonestly, assembly is fun…
That said, don’t avoid trendy things only because they are trendy. I sympathize though.

1·6 days agoI sympathize, but why would your attempt succeed when the thousand other such attempts litter the halls of history? Or, what advantage does this have over building a new userland atop OpenBSD?

0·10 days agoSo we need a tiny extra UDP address index service (udp-addr-index) to provide this mapping.
This feels close enough to STUN or TURN that I wonder if they could be repurposed. Probably not, but…
Conversely, I wonder what a malicious actor could do with spoofed UDP source addresses…

0·11 days agoFantastic example of why integer promotion is a kinda horrible idea, as is treating
booltypes as integers in general.

1·13 days agoHm, good writeup. I feel like “diff of a filesystem” is a wheel that’s been reinvented enough times we should have an off the shelf solution for it by now…

1·14 days agoTrue, but we’ve also been at that point for at least 20 years. …Hmmm, there’s a business idea, I know that Russia and China space agencies some communication ships out in the Pacific and just suck up the blind spots when they can’t get global coverage. Maybe there’s opportunities for a company that sells time on big honkin’ radio dishes across the world?
