1·8 hours agoThis has been a pretty longstanding problem of evil style paradox with programming productivity claims long before AI. If e.g. something like TDD, or Rust, or functional programming, or whatever lets us in some sense build better and more correct software, why is the software world running on decades old versions of C++ and Java?

1·5 days agoGenerally malloc:ed memory is grown linearly from the end of the process data segment to the program break, so if you
sbrk(0)before allocating any data I think you could do this with regular mallocs in any C-like language.

1·5 days agoI believe the list of publicly certified domain certificates from Let’s Encrypt is the most popular source for bots now, since I’ve had new domains get hit within 1h of existing and the only “thing” that knew about them at that point was their service.
Solution could be to do wildcard certs and then put stuff you don’t want found on a subdomain.

1·6 days agoYeah the inverted pyramid is pretty much the template for all my technical blog posts. Very rarely goes wrong.
“Overreliance on links” makes me sad. I love linking to things. I have a suspicion that nobody on the internet clicks links any more, if they ever did.
I generally find websites in general tend to not link nearly enough. There’s a crap ton of websites with nearly no outbound links what so ever, I think in some misguided attempt to keep the visitor from leaving.
Though link-rot is a legitimate concern and a pretty big problem, but I don’t think not linking is the answer.
“Drop the formality. Write the way you speak in real life.” - 100% agree. You have a voice, use it!
I don’t speak the same way to everyone in every situation, that would be weird. Formal language doesn’t have to lack a voice, though it demands familiarity with that writing style to shine through.

Mostly-for-fun experimental C++ port of Marginalia’s index is progressing.
Buffer pool is done I think and I’m pleased with how it’s turned out. Attacking the main index structure next. These two are like the epicenter of highly technical and deeply fiddly work. When they’re done I think it’s time to decide whether to port the entire thing or call it a day.
Feeling pretty optimistic this might be happening though. Overall the C++ version is a fair bit more expressive mostly owing to Java’s awkward paths to directly manipulating memory, made even worse by the lack of standard operations (binary search, sort) for off-heap memory.
