Ask Science@lemmy.world•What is the theoretical radius of the Cosmic Gravity Background?English
1·10 days agoNot really, exponential expansion baffles my brain.
For example, when I hear that “after Inflation, the Visible Universe was the size of an orange”… and I don’t get it, I can’t quite grasp it, I would have imagined that the Visible Universe after Inflation would have been a hundred million lightyears across. How the light emitted from opposite ends of the diameter of an orange took 13.8 billion years to get to us in the center… or… something like that, with a cosmological redshift of z = (10)^16… I guess?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some actors that can only play themselves?
20·3 months agoI scrolled through the entire thread down and back up, it’s a bit of a shock that John Wayne was not mentioned even once… until now.
Information can only travel at the speed of light.
I like the general term being used nowadays instead of “the speed of light” - the speed of causality; which is nice because it fits neatly into E=mc2.
It bears mentioning that none of this would have been necessary if people have gone out and VOTED in numbers like these.
Instead they first passively threw a tantrum enabling this Gestapo, now their country is a global pariah, not to be trusted again, while expending so much more energy, experiencing much more inconvenience and risk than voting, just to send a symbolic message to sociopaths who have the power, enjoy abusing it, and do NOT care to listen.
Which is to say: this is meaningless, voting is everything and you blew it yet again. But people insist on wanting to be inspired by one godking figurehead, refusing to understand how consistently voting just one day a year, in presidentials, midterms and off-years, is how political momentum is built or eroded, how a government is not one godking president, but an entire system with hundreds of thousands of civil servants, elected, appointed and hired, at every level of government, momentum builds slowly.
If Democrats ever win again, it will be with one hand tied behind their back, facing right-wing sabotage every step of the way, just as has happened every time since Jimmy Carter, and if they can’t wave a magic political wand and fix this unfixable mess in one go, the oh-so-precious impatient electorate is going to throw yet another destructive tantrum and back to square minus five or worse.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•Would the tidal forces of the Jovian System affecting Europa mean there might be huge air pockets between a liquid ocean and icy shell?English
0·7 months agoIt’s a completely different scenario than on Earth. Also Europa has less gravity than our moon, even, and just 13% than Earth’s gravity. Much less pull from below, much more pull from above. That super thick ice shell just might stay in place like a church dome, even if the water level comes and goes.
I’ll take the XL Pancit Canton, please.
After reading the app description in your link, I still don’t understand, what does this Captcha app actually do, and what does it have to do with A.I.?

0·2 years agoThen the word alphabet comes from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek writing system.
If we had gotten the word directly from the Phoenicians, we might probably call it alephbeth instead.Just a couple of nights ago it hit me that the word geometry comes from Geo: Earth and metron: measure.
Etymologies can suddenly snap into focus things that have been right there in front of our eyes all our lives, but never thought to notice.
