DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Are there any good google maps alternatives?
5·2 months agoThis is a real problem. Search on any OSM app is not the same as GMaps or the other mainstream map services. Contributing to OSM through EveryDoor or StreetComplete in your area will definitely help improve this but as a stop gap I use an app called GMaps WV. It loads Google Maps in an isolated web browser, which allows you to use their search and once you find what your looking for it has a share option that copies the coordinates to the clipboard which you paste into CoMaps and let it take over.
You can’t use the DDC because classification systems require a custodian who is in charge of maintaining the system as the dataset changes.
For the same reason you can’t just slap any UPC code on an item and sell it. There are standards for a reason.
You would need to invent your own classification system, and a mechanism that would not only be able to automate the process but also process the dataset quickly enough to keep up with change rate of the internet.
The infrastructure for a project this size would demand a buisness model to finance its upkeep. Its impractical in the same way trying to run your own search engine index isn’t really practical, which is why metasearch engines like SearX are a thing.
Maybe start with something more realistic and achievable like indexing the Lemmy Fediverse.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Introverts of our era spend their time on their computers, but what did introverts do before? Like when literacy rates were lower (pre-1950s)? Or before the printing press?
0·1 year agoIn 2003 I worked for a small company that was attempting to be an early ebook publisher, before the days of ereaders and smartphones. It was too ahead of its time and closed after our first two publications. One of the books was on an old mining town, and part of my job was doing research and collecting photos and reference materials for the book.
I had the chance to read the diary of a miner from the 1860s. Keeping a diary was one popular hobby, but one thing that stood out to me was how he described a day off he had, it was a Sunday I believe and he spent 6 hours watching a bird and writing down all that it did.
What I gathered is that in the absence of entertainment or chores, humans will find things to fill the void. What seems extremely boring to you or me was very fulfilling to those with no other options.

I have given up trying to have this conversation, especially on Lemmy, but even in general. There is a mass hysteria surrounding anything even tangentiality related to AI. I think there must be something innately human that makes people ‘throw the baby out with the bathwater’ when it comes to change and the fear that comes with it.
What I find more productive is to just leave the naysayers and doomers to there own devices. Most people just don’t get it, and that’s okay.
