There is no information on sportbots about how many accounts they have listed, but I’m guess it’s in the “high hundreds - low thousands” range.

That’s way too many bots for people to block. Yes, I’m aware there’s a setting to block all bots, but that’s too all or nothing.

If you insist on going that route, maybe stand up a dedicated instance like one of the other repost instances (and only post to local communities there) so people can just block that instance.

Maybe Lemmy with federation disabled and use a nice 3rd party UI as the default interface for it. If you want to link up with similar community hubs, you can set federation to allow list mode and only federate with each other.

Same. My “app” is just the webapp pinned as a PWA. Can’t even tell it’s not an app.

Come to think of it, most of my “apps” are that; very few locally installed, and that’s how I like it.

Can’t rule that out, but it would likely be optional at best.

LibreTranslate is pretty heavy to host, so I’m not sure how many instances would want to enable that. There are some hosted LibreTranslate instances, but I’m not sure how overloaded/performant they tend to be and/or if they’re suitable for a bunch of people to plug a Lemmy client into.

FWIW, I run a local LT service for myself, and it’s deployed via Docker. It’s not too difficult to setup, but yeah, you’ll need to be comfortable with Linux, Docker, and probably Nginx/Caddy/etc basics before tackling that.

Photon has a setting option to integrate LibreTranslate.

I haven’t played with it yet, but I would assume that does what you want. Other than third party clients or browser extensions offering translation capability, I don’t think there’s any native way to do that.

In general, solid advice. Though there are some extra params such as start, t, and end which can be useful if you want to reference a specific part of a video. Sadly, though, those params are no longer honored when viewing a video embed and only now seem to work on YT proper.

The concept is inherently flawed when you introduce an aspect (LLM) that can and will hallucinate (read: make shit up) when it’s trying to present reality.

Mine’s a small instance and runs on my existing infrastructure, so my only real cost (aside from a crazy amount of unpaid time and stress) is the domain name which is about $20/year.

If I moved it to dedicated infrastructure, I’ve estimated it would cost me about $65/mo for just the backend, UI, and database services (to maintain the same level of performance, anyway. Could probably host it for less and take a performance hit). Object storage for pict-rs would probably be around $10/mo since I force it to use webp and have a 512 KB limit for user uploads.

Those numbers may be a little high, but they’re based on my existing VPS provider which has amazing SLAs and uptime.

I totally get where they’re coming from with that shutdown announcement. I’ve had to “talk myself off a ledge” a few times to not go the same route and shut mine down. Ended up making some server policy changes that helped, but there’s eventually going to be something else later.

If we keep treating the Fediverse as just a scrappy, amateur effort, it will never reach its full potential and it will be forever just a niche thing.

I can’t see those, specifically, but a similar pattern of mass community bans after even remotely criticizing an authoritarian regime is completely on brand for Dessalines.

I don’t have record of the comment that triggered these, but when it’s something like civility, it’s usually just a comment removal and maybe a single community ban.

There’s an instance level setting to hide moderator names from unauthenticated and/or non-mod users. They probably have that enabled. Those actions federate, though, so the mod names won’t be hidden if viewed from an instance that doesn’t hide the mod names.

I’m not sure if there’s a solution here, but I’d like to urge people to avoid lemmy.ml hosted communities in favor of communities on more reasonable instances.

Did that months ago; defederated completely when they turned into Lemmygrad-lite. At first I missed some more active FOSS communities, but since then, others on different instances have become more active. programming.dev has a lot of communities that overlap with some of the bigger FOSS ones on .ml so maybe check out what they’ve got.

If there’s a community that only exists there, be the change you want to see: create it somewhere else, nurture it, and give it time to grow. You’re not the only one making this complaint about .ml, and you probably won’t be the last.

Related: I genuinely feel that ml being the official or at least de-facto flagship instance is turning people away.
