I wanted to use the latest “GNOME parental Control” but my distro does not package it because it has some security design flaws.

With this sysext option i could at least try it and see If it works without “altering” my System. Sure I could use e.g. a BTRFS snapshot. But this would also revert all other changes made after. With this sysext option I would be able to just revert the changes regarding parental control. Which is nice!

Overall I agree with Torvalds standpoint: If you do Not want to use AI -> that’s fine. If you want to use it and you are producing good results -> also fine If you want to use it and produce Bad results (e.g. do not review/Check theory output) -> Not good and your contribution will be rejected

I would also propose going with Tailscale instead If a VPN + DynDNS solution. Imho it is a lot easier to Setup compared to VPN + DynDNS If you are a beginner and just starting out.

If at some point you need more and then is available in the free Tier of Tailscale and you do not want to pay for it (and you have built up some knowledge!) you can switch to something like Headscale or Netbird.

I would almost agree to this response. But there is one single Extension that I think is crucial: Appindicator. Without this things like Nextcloud or Synology Drive cannot be used propperly.

I was leaning to also include copyous. But it is not absolutely mandatory.

For me the Cons are:

• No support to enable Full-Disk Encryption after the System install: This is something baked into Windows Bitlocker. You might say “But you can set it up during installation by just checking th checkbox!”. Yes, you are right. But why can’t I check this checkbox after installation? I know why a lot of people will say “this is not necessary or possible”. In the end the only real reason is “nobody bothered implementing this propperly yet”. But that’s the problem.
• Secure Boot support is still rough arround the edges: I don’t know if LVFS is now able to update the keys for booting shim. But this would help improve the situation. Users should not be bothered with “checking this on their own”. Nobody is talking about “Will my Windows machine be able to boot after this?”. Everyone is just expecting it to work out just fine. Which it proppably will. I would expect it to be the same on Linux.
• Proprietary Software for managing/configuring hardware: I am looking at PC-Peripheral Manufacturers like Logitech, Corsair (Keyboards), etc. Why do I need to use your Software to change Key-Bindings? I know there is VIA/QMK. But not everyone supports it and it is very bothersome to check for everything “Will I be able to use their Software for the product I bought?”. And especially fingerprint readers and IR cameras… Why do they need to be soooo complicated…
• No easy way to synchronize account settings between machines: Say about MacOS what you want…but switching between one machine and another is pretty easy if you are willig to use iCloud. And it is baked into a lot of applications like Safari. There doe snot exist something on Linux that has the same level of integration and is as polished as iCloud.
• NVidia Drivers: Situation has improved. But if you want to still use and old but working Card (1060 for example) on a new Kernel it will get problematic to find the right package to install to get the correct driver. This took my a whole day on OpenSuse Tumbleweed… A lot easier on the AMD side, but they have problems too.
• AMD Hardware acceleration: Whose idea was it to not include the VCE drivers in the open source driver? Shame on you! Why do I need to install the proprietary driver (which will replace the opensource driver) to use this? But then this proprietary driver has its own limitations. So I can’t use my device to the fullest. This situation does not exist on Windows. Are you kidding me?
• Propper systemwide logging for all Apps: Nobody system has this solved. But I would like it so much! It would be so easy when helping people to say “Go to the Logging system, hit clear, do the thing that is broken on your system and send me the logs afterwards”. This could help so much if you are helping multiple people using different systems with different applications. Why no SysLog integration everywhere?

But on the other hand why I am using Linux:

It still best fits my needs. It does what I want when I want. I don’t need to navigate through 3 Menus and multiple selection to store MY FILES on MY SYSTEM. You shall be damned OneDrive! A system update happens when I say so, and no sooner. You can download everything in the background, I am cool with that. But if you dare to restart my system during my workday…then you are part of the problem(s), not the solution!

Me personally I agree with the first point of the Author regarding SMB Handling. Requiring to Type smb://<my-network-share> in the address bar in Nautilus Network section and then Drag-and-Drop it to the Bookmarks section IS Not very User friendly.

I would also appreciate a simple Wizard to do this.

Regarding the Topic about reformatting a Disk: Even I don’t care about GPT, MBR and creating Partitions. And i am Developing in Linux since more then 10 years. I also just want to wipe my Stick and make it empty. I guess Most users also don’t care about the Filesystem used. They only want to set:

• Works only in Linux (use ext4 or xfs)
• Works on anything that has a USB Port (use FAT32)

Anything else could be hidden behind an advanced section.

This is all correct and i get it. I was wondering about the VOB part for MakeMKV. Because I never get a VOB Out of MakeMKV.

For me MakeMKV gives me a single or multiple (depending on how many I choose) .mkv files for the video files vailable on a DVD/BlueRay. I can then decide to use them as they are, or run them through Handbrake to convert to my desired format.

Isn’t this the case on your side?

for me it sounds like you actually do not want to communicate via E-Mail (for obvious reasons) but require one for registering with a service that you actually want to use. Can’t you use a throw away E-Mail to register at the service? Something like the anonbox from the Chao Computer Club: https://www.anonbox.net/de/

That way you can create an account with a throw-away Email and then use the account without any linking to you. But be sure to use an anonymuous, non-trackable wayy when creating this throw-away mail and also while using the service you are registering for.

Also “handcrafted cables”: What do you mean? You make each cable by Hand? That would be ridiculous and incredibly ineffective. Look at companies like LAPP Kabel who also operate in Germany to see how its done propperly.

It looks to me like someone is trying to ride the wave of EU alternatives and sustainability, but doesn’t actually have a suitable product.

The interesting thing is that it does not look like a permanent/always thing. A couple of days I also got these Pop-Ups (which you can circumvent by using “Desktop-Mode” in your mobile Browser) but I do not get them anymore. Is some kind of A/B testing ongoing or did they remove the changes?
