I certainly agree with agencies having some amount of open access to their data, but only for things that are actually relevant. For example, the IRS should be able to check Social Security benefits to verify tax reports, but it shouldn’t see details like where their checks are being sent.

If an agency needs access to data, they should specify exactly what they need and the source agency should provide an API to only get that into.

The libertarian wing was never really very libertarian, they mostly didn’t care much about weed and wanted to actually cut spending (or at least claimed to).

Look at Mike Lee (unfortunately my Senator) he calls himself a “libertarian” because he says no a lot, but he also toes the party line when it natters and hasn’t championed any social issues I’d call “libertarian.” I changed my registration to Republican just so I could vote against this clown twice in one election.

They’re “doing business” there by serving ads to their citizens, that’s the legal basis for suing them. Whether that goes anywhere depends on the laws governing the business and any leverage UK has (say, going after advertising who do business with the company and in the UK).

It’s really not. Hiring was much easier 3-4 years ago as the pandemic nonsense was ending and people were bailing on companies forcing people to be back in office 5x/week. The competent devs knew they could do better, while the less competent devs held on to what they had.

Now with a bunch of layoffs, the candidate pool is completely flooded, and since we’re not a big flashy tech company, we seem to get a ton of drive-by applicants who aren’t qualified at all.

Exactly. Our recruiters aren’t tech recruiters, they handle recruitment for the entire company (and we’re not a tech company). As a result, a lot of our candidates have flashy resumes, but no actual skill. As in, I asked someone to write code in whatever language they wanted and they couldn’t do it. And it wasn’t some difficult assignment, this was a first round weeder task. The candidate straight up lied about having any development experience whatsoever. I even had an Information Systems background candidate say straight up that they’re not interested in a dev role, which they were explicitly applying for.

And that’s unfortunately far more common than not. People think that because they paid for a bootcamp that they’re now competent enough to write code professionally, but it turns out, a lot of them didn’t apply themselves at all.

There are good candidates in that mix, it’s just hard to find them. We’re happy to train a promising candidate, and we’ve hired interns that we’ve offered full-time positions to. We don’t even particularly care about age, we had someone internally decide to transition to tech from a blue collar background, so we funded their education and now they write code for production on the side of their main job (they’re our support person for our blue collar users, and they’re really good at it).

If you’re not a big flashy tech company, you’re not going to get as much attention from qualified candidates, and you’ll get a bunch of trash applicants who are looking for easy marks on the job boards.

Some ISPs block other ports, so if you want to host something, that might be your best option.

Pretty much that. Think of an Equifax style breach, but with porn, and all the blackmail that could create.

Are you sure about that? I grew up with dialup and a publicly placed family court computer and I was definitely aware of porn, despite even simple images loading at a crawl.

Children will find porn, that’s a given, our choice is where they’ll likely go. Do we want them going to a place parents are aware of and can look out for, or do we want them going to the sketchy corners of the web to find what they want?

Yup. We’re hiring, but the candidate pool is a minefield of utter trash, so it takes a while to hire despite having hundreds of applicants. We don’t expect much beyond basic competency, but apparently that’s too much to ask sometimes.

And everyone and their dog is trying to get into tech. The industry is bound to get saturated eventually…

Yeah, I’m more-or-less the same. Outside of Silicon Valley, Seattle, and a few other big metros, tech pay is good, but not amazing. I know what I’d have to do to get $200k+, but I’m unwilling to (crazy hours, move to SF, etc).

Sure, assuming the age verification actually works. But it also adds risk to people accessing those sites since now they need to do some form of identity verification.

The net result here is going to be less traffic to those sites, and more damaging leaks when those sites inevitably get breached, and kids are still going to access porn, and probably worse porn than what’s on the main sites.

Any form of identify verification is a privacy concern, since someone is going to be logging that crap. And young people are just going to get that content (or worse content) somewhere else, so it’s not even solving the problem effectively.

I’m agreeing w/ you that stock price is irrelevant here, and that’s what the video opens with. The market is unhappy w/ Apple because they’re delivering essentially what people claim to want: a solid product with steady improvements w/o anything crazy. Microsoft, on the other hand, is delivering what the market wants, which is shoving AI into everything.

I guess I don’t understand why the video is relevant to the average user, who doesn’t really care about innovation and instead wants a consistent experience.

The study you provided seems to be looking at safety features some time after purchase, which has more to do with after sale service than reliability of the car.

I’m far more interested in defects causing recalls or repairs than whether people get their brakes inspected properly. Your study seems to be measuring how much people use the service warranty and the quality of that service, not whether the car is actually built well and has a reliable transmission or engine.

Yeah, it’s honestly crazy to me because I think lockdowns were a net benefit to me. I was able to spend more time with my SO and kids, I had time for exercise and hobbies since I didn’t need to sit in traffic, and I didn’t need to spend as much social energy making small talk (I’m introverted). I honestly thrived during COVID. Getting COVID sucked for the week or so I had symptoms, but that was honestly a small price to pay for solitude.

But then I see headlines of people literally going crazy, see a dramatic increase in road rage in my area (which didn’t have lockdowns, only social distancing for businesses), and see my own extended family struggling.

I feel so bad for people like your grandparents that suffered. I just personally wish the COVID lifestyle was more accessible.

Sure, that’s an argument for why the stock price is suffering, not for why macOS is in danger. Apple is still massively profitable, the stock price just reflects the market’s perception that profits won’t increase as fast as their competitors.

It sounds like you’re complaining about not having consistent DOM state, not about the XSLT library. Whether the library is built in to the browser or an add-on is irrelevant to your problem.

I’m saying it shouldn’t, it should instead be distributed to the people. It should be used for something like UBI.
