There is only one correct answer: stop using Facebook
after years of saying this, i gave up. people have integrated facebook into their lives to the degree that saying ādelete facebookā is pretty much the same as saying ācut your own balls off.ā they wonāt do it, no matter if they even acknowledge facebook sucks and is a waste of time. thatās rare, though. usually itās āi canāt leave facebook, i would lose contact with everyone!ā same shit with twitter, instagram, ticktock, snapchatāall that bullshit
The reality is you only lose contact with people who donāt matter enough anymore. When I left around 15 years ago I reached out to those I wanted to keep in touch with and made sure I had their number. Anyone else if they looked hard enough could find me elsewhere if they wanted, or already had means to contact me directly. Most did not.
But guess what? My relationships with people are deeper. Itās been wildly positive for me. The only issue I had at the time was missing out on events from acquaintances, but thatās not an issue anymore with alternative apps
people live shallow af lives in general
You will be locked out of your local community without Facebook. Iāve been off it for over a decade but needed to get rid of a couch without paying $150 to do it and Facebook was 10 minutes and itās gone. But a couch is one thing. Anything local requires Facebook.
whatās the $150 to get rid of a couch for? just drive it to the landfill
or call salvation army/goodwill/habitat for humanity-- theyāll come get whatever
Landfill doesnāt take it for free. Itās probably $50 and maybe borrow a trailer and a vehicle with a hitch.
again, i give up. use facebook, because life canāt be lived without it
Nah. I mean Iām off Facebook and own a trailer. Iām actually on your side Iām just trying to be realistic. $150 is too high unless you have to hire a company to haul it away.
You can totally leave Facebook. My wife is still on it but I think she doesnāt use it as much. Itās dying, just far too slowly.
It absolutely can. It just takes a person with a fucking spine.
I would not say life canāt be lived without it, but itās more so that Facebook has so successfully commodified the public sphere that it seems almost like a natural, inherent part of contemporary communicative actions.
No fucking excuses. If you have an account you are in full spirit of what they do.
For me, gradually gathering other contacts methods for my close friends and family. And then eventually permanently delete Facebook ā no need for data or whatever, it was mostly garbage anyways.
Same process with changing email providers.
Itās the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and itās ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?
But what is the real alternative?
Go out and meet people?
But what is the real alternative?
Go out and meet people?
I get what youāre saying, and to a certain extent you are correct, but where do you go to meet people when all the people you might meet are sitting at home swiping their phone screen?
donāt know where you live but where I live, the outside is full of real people
No they do have a point. How are you to meet people with similar interests, if your similar interests are āEnjoys staying at home and being cozy all dayā
if thatās your only interest in life you do not need a partner
Nowadays they donāt understand how that works.
Itās the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and itās ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?
dating apps are different in that youāre specifically using it to get a date, instead of trying to make your life look more fun/happy/glamorous than that of your āfriendsā. once you meet someone and start a relationship, the app served its purpose and (in theory) you stop using it. iāve never used a dating app, but i can see the value in them for people who are looking for specific less-than-common traits in a partner-- if youāre asexual (for example) and looking for someone whoās the same, then an app might be the only way you can find that someone. the alternative is go out looking on your own every day until you happen across whatever specific thing youāre looking for by chance, which may never happen.
I married a very nice girl last month. We met at work 5 years ago.
We need to figure out how to rebuild social relations without the Internet. Otherwise the billionaire class will control access to the opposite gender. For the sake of humanity, go be nice to a stranger.
TIL Iām a eunuch
I remember when the backlash to Xitter was pretty high, culturally. I asked why our company was still using Xitter.
Crickets. And even after he gave the Nazi salute, still no change.
The answer is - āthatās where everyone isā. They arenāt wrong. The network effect sucks.
Meh. āThatās where everyone isā itās more like thatās where all the bots and algorithmic gatekeeping are. I get way more engagement on mastodon than I ever did on twitter post-2012 algorithm shakeup. Before the algorithmic censorship, I got lots of engagement on twitter. But that twitter hasnāt existed for a long time. When I got on mastodon it was like oh. The algorithm is the entire problem. No wonder OWS and the Arab spring were so big. No wonder the algorithms came after them.
Yeah, it depends on the engagement you are after. Companies are after where all the people are. Not sure if they even care if itās being propped up by bots and trolls.
Also, companies mostly all just do what other companies do - another network effect. If going on Bluesky or something like Mastodon is not something all the other companies are doing, they wonāt.
Itās owned and ran by a openly nazi guy, and is clearly manipulated with his bots, but politicians almost everywhere are still using it. Its crazy
I tell people this and they complain that they cannot part with their precious marketplace. Fucking slaves.
I mean, better Facebook marketplace than buying new. Marketplace has basically entirely replaced Craigslist for buying used stuff, itās really the only game in town. If they only use it for the marketplace, things could be worse.
Hereās one now.
Alright, my bad. Consumerism is totally great actually. Everyone should just keep buying things new and throwing them away when they donāt want them anymore.
Are you crazy? Everyone should support a soul-stealing anti-minority fascist bank that exists to fund a child-raping criminal dictator- all so they have conveniently buy and sell piles of junk they wonāt give a shit about in another year!
⦠dude. You wonāt ever justify supporting this shit.
Who said anything about piles of junk? I buy stuff I was going to buy anyway, just secondhand. My money goes to other people instead of a corporation. Which soul-stealing corporation would you prefer that money go to?
You support everything Facebook is doing. Take a bow. Youāre hurting a lot of people.
Youāre preaching deaf ears.
FB Marketplace has crushed all alternatives in many places. But find one whereās thatās not the case, and be sure someone there is going to lecture you on how THEY donāt need it therefore YOU shouldnāt use it, or they never buy/sell anything second hand online, but they absolutely know
how you should do thathow you shouldnāt do that, without proposing any alternative whatsoever.IāÆremember the glorious time when beginners seeking help on Linux were getting answers such as āit works on my machineā or āyou donāt need to do that, I donāt , instead I do blablablaā. Same vibe.
Exactly!!! Share that with your friends!!!
It blows me away when I meet leftist activists who refuse to stop using corporate social media. The common refrain is āits where everyone isā or āno one uses [insert any decentralized and federated service]ā.
You cannot liberate yourself, or the rest of society, when you actively use the tools of your oppressors.
Look, I agree for the most part. Fuck FB and X and all the rest to hell. But organizers know that you need the most people you can get to have a chance of making a difference. That means you use every tool available for outreach. Iāve seen protests organized entirely on non-corporate platforms and they are⦠Small. You donāt see those in the news and people driving by generally ignore them. If you can get the hype going through tiktok or facebook or whatever and get hundreds of people on board you can bring attention and make a difference. Now something Iāve seen done is using them to pull more people and then moving those people to decentralized options.
Then funnel them onto the fediverse from corporate social media, as you mentioned. The house is on fire, get them out of it.
Educate people (campaigns), organize tech workshops showing people how to use the other tools, set up local servers that can be used for organizing existing groups. Frame corporate social media as part of the data center problem⦠Thereās so many ways to approach it but as long as you keep using those tools, you will never carry through with getting people onto the fediverse. You can never just move them to decentralized spaces if not enough people use it, so use it (I know you are already though as weāre here :)
Change is hard. But global climate collapse and WW3 are far worse options.

I can see how easy that is from how mainstream Lemmy is right now /s

This is how I feel when I meet leftist activists who refuse to stop eating meat
I tried to get about 2 dozen people to leave a Slack channel and move over to a Matrix room.
Wanna guess how many takers I got? And these are all technically proficient people.
Zero.
Yes, lets just leave all plattforms where we can get a bit of public reach and remove our ability to respond to people talking about us.
Online propaganda gets more necessary every day and leaving mainstream platforms just destroys any capability for it. Use smaller less controlled platforms for people already on your side but the only way to reach the average people will be on stuff like Instagram as long as it stays popular.
Their reach on the platform will be limited at best by the algorithm, making sure only a minimal number of people see their posts. Thatās why they need to diversify their medias print.
But telling them to stop using FB altogether⦠Nah. Even if MetaāÆdoes this sort of crap, they can scream like they do now. If that scream reaches just a handful of people so that they finally get how bad that company is, or push them just enough to start exploring alternatives, thatās a win.
You just gotta get them join the community on a federated or otherwise uncontrolled channel. Just like all these shitty communities want me to join their Discord.
Nothing more cowardly than this opinion
You probably shouldnāt assume that monetized leftism is something thatās authentic. Leftism is just a brand thatās fairly profitable.
Hasan Piker is a creation of Jeff Bezos, and now heās a boogeyman being used to scare people into voting for the party that cuts his taxes.
Thinking wealthy social media influencers are going to bring about some glorious revolution is the flaw here. Wondering why wealthy āleftistā influencers stick with corporate social media is missing the whole point of the scam.
Leftist activists are about as phony as $3 bills. They talk a lot of shit and cannot/willnot walk the walk. Proven time and again.
They hate everything they refuse to let go of.
Donāt you ever get tired of spreading this same goddamn lie over and over and over and over and over?
As long as obnoxious leftists exist, no? I donāt.
So you admit you are spreading a lie, and agree that leftist activists arenāt phony and do walk the walk. Thank you comrade.
Soā¦. Reading comprehension isnāt really your thing, is it?
You need to reread what you wrote, because Iām describing literally what you are saying. You answered that you ādonātā get tired of āspreading this same goddamn lieā. I am a grandmaster of reading comprehension, nice try.
LMAO!
A grandmaster of reading comprehensionā¦.
Fucking hilarious!!!
Oh, this is not just a leftist issue.
āWe demand answersā??? Are you joking???
Zuckerberg is practically glued to trump side like a fashion accessory.
āWe demand answersā
Zuckerberg replied: āDumb fucksā.
Well, technically that is an answer.
So weāre good now right?
Hereās their answer. The fuck are you doing on a fascist platform and expecting anything else?
Well, you donāt always get to choose, for me itās among other things, my municipality and sports club posting updates and info exclusively on meta platforms. I complained, believe me, but it dalls on deaf ears.
As Geddy once put it.
Even if you choose not to decide. You still have made a choice.
Though believe me when I say I understand you. But we always have a choice. Even if you have to stick with toxic shit like that in the short-term. And if youāre not super techy. Or have the most free time available to focus on something like that yourself. We all can do more than just shout and tell people to move. I say this to myself as well.
When it comes to activities and movements like this. Ones that donāt favor the oligarchs. Centralized platforms are a liability. But they are also unfortunately the best developed. Telling people to move to alternatives. A lot of times means leaving behind Comforts or things they have come to rely on. Which just adds more friction to the friction that already exists over switching. Maybe the community doesnāt exist. Maybe it exists but no one post it. Maybe thereās no one moderating it.
Iām looking at trying to post more frequently to local communities that are neglected on the feddi. Possibly even taking over administration of them. Point is we can always choose. And thereās always a little more we can do regardless of our level of skill. Basically, I guess itās a situation of we need to be the change we want to see.
Zuck full on cuckmode
Theyāre not the only ones.
Reddit stole the r/NoKings subreddit and has locked it out. They claim itās up for adoption as of 5-months-ago but will of course never cede it to the organizers of No Kingās.
ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN etc., have barely mentioned it, and it doesnāt remotely come up in Google News save for a sparse few pages of local news stories.
The only good news from representing my area is that while the protest was half the size of past ones, general support from people on the road was much higher with much less dissent.
Yanis Varoufakis is right, we are heading into technofeudalism.
Reddit is fully up MAGA ass. sPutz is a wannabe Musk so Reddit-anything is going to side with the nazis.
Peter Thiel is one of redditās long time investors. They like to keep this out of conversation.
Itās up there with Musk buying Twitter and Zuck being Facebook. They manage to sell themselves to normies as the social media thatās not like the others.
The answer appears self evident. Donāt use Meta and that includes INSTAGRAM.
You would think, but I still see that little āfā at the bottom of soooo many webpages.
Yeah, but there are also rās for reddit and look where that got us.
There were protests all over my city yesterday and I can find barely any coverage. I even looked at Reddit, which was flooded with No Kings pictures back in March, and there was barely anything for the events yesterday. Definitely sus as hell.
This is why protest has to be disruptive. A bunch of people holding funny signs in a park on a Saturday afternoon doesnāt have an impact.
It connects people with like minded people who also decided to show up so from a networking and community building perspective itās not worthless. Lots of people meet the contacts that will later recruit them to knock on doors or phone bank or run for office in the future who would never show up to a town meeting or city council meeting.
I hate to say it, but yeah. Look @ France. They fuck shit up whenever the government tries to fuck with them, and have a higher standard of living as a result.
Their economy is on the verge of collapse because of this. They borrowed a lot of money to create that high standard of living and āfuck shit upā means someone has to pay to fix things later which also cost money.
Oooh, donāt they know they could have had an economy on the verge of collapse with nothing to show for it, that would be so much better.
Sure it does. People build networks at these events. One of the tactics of fascism is to make dissenters feel they are alone and maybe crazy for feeling the way they do. These events tell people that they are not alone, and it is actually the authoritarians that are crazy, not them.
For a non-violent resistance campaign to succeed, you need to build up the numbers and reach a threshold of people working together to impede the actions of the authoritarians. You donāt accomplish this by engaging in violent actions, that just scares people away and gives justification for the authoritarians to do violent reprisals. Violent acts actually help the authoritarians gain more power, non-violent resistance drains their power.
I never said protest should he violent. I said it should he disruptive. Violence =/= civil disobedience.
This is the first Iām hearing about it. There was a NoKings protest yesterday?
Check the website: www.nokings.org
Can absolutely confirm. Iām not American so I get most of my news through, well, the news and while Iāve seen people alluding to the protests Iām only getting a fraction of a fraction of the information I was getting in March.
I love this image from San Francisco:

Meta is a national security threat.
Oligarchs are a global security threat and must be met with extreme prejudice.
They are the new colonizers. We are the new colonists from which labor and wealth are now extracted through organized deceit, coercion, and sooner or later, force.
Oh random election rules that changed all at once?
Itās like 2024 again. This is part of the reason so many of us are here on Lemmy or BlueSky or whatever, we need to figure out alternative means of discussion.
You demand answers? The answer is pretty obvious: Zuck wants there to be a king.
Nah, Zuck wants to be the Court Jester.
Maybe. Doesnāt mean he doesnāt want a king.
Mark is not someone who particularly enjoys travel or, in fact, people. And I know heās hoping to have another baby in 2017, so this doesnāt make any sense as a personal challenge. āAre there any states in particular you want to go to?ā I ask tentatively. āIowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania.ā Ugh. The traditional stops for presidential candidates.
- Careless People
Why wouldnāt they, Suckerberg already bent the knee and kissed the ring. This was an investment by him and these rallies are reducing the value of his investment so he is doing all in his power to slow them down. This has been the identical behaviour of large corporations since world word II when they saluted Nazis because they thought Nazis were going to win.
The best answer is to reduce/stop your usage of websites like facebook and shitter. Yeah I know there is still whatsapp, instagram, google services, android phones etc etc And as they acquire more and more of social media, it becomes hard for a particular individual to completely get off the services these companies provide. But you can pick your battles and atleast remove those which are not really essential to your day to day life.
Suckerberg already bent the knee and kissed the ring
Facebook has always served right wing agendas. long before trump ever came around.
conservatives have always gotten the soft hand, while any liberal rule breakers have gotten the iron fist.
and the reason is simple.
Conservatives are idiots. They click all the links, they watch all the ads, and they generate magnitudes more money than liberals with their adblockers and their inability to believe every bullshit propaganda fad.
Iād wager if they thought theyād get away with it, theyād just straight up ban anyone thats not a die hard conservative, not for any political agenda, but for the pure monetary exploitation.
I think this time is different though. Previously it was working in concert with people who tried to keep the atrocities behind the curtains and pretended to slap facebook on the wrist when they bent the rules. So everything was somewhat concealed in a facade of a justice system that seemed to care. And tech companies played their part by pretending to care. That did slow things down for tech oligarchs to some extent. They had to navigate their way through the justice system to make sure they still didnāt end up in a legal tangle.
Now Trump comes, he openly expresses the fact he doesnāt give a single shit about any kind of law and is intent on ruling the country like a thug and distort the law for this purpose too. He gives a mandate to every tech company āsupport me and you can run rampant without even pretending to care about the law, or donāt and perish because I will use the said law to completely destroy youā. And I think none of us were surprised when every big tech kissed the ring because this was their wet dream.
yeah, it was their wet dream because pandering to conservatism has always been a money maker. Its why every social media ever has always given wristslaps to conservatives for major rule violations, while liberal users get bans for minor infractions.
Cause conservatives as their bread and butter money makers. Always have been, Always will be. Nothing has changed except for how openly they parade their preferential treatment.
I would have thought the answers would be self-evident.
Meta/Facebook has literally had political dissidents killed in other countries. Do not think they will hesitate to do the same in their own. Specifically, they gave up GPS/location information on dissidents trying to work together against the government. They were killed. Facebook knew exactly what would happen to them and could have told the dictator to pound sand, but then they might not be allowed to operate there.
Donāt use popular social media like Facebook, X, Reddit, or Discord for any kind of protest. They will always bend the knee to the ākingsā youāre protesting against. Every fucken time.
This is the very least shocking thing about Tech Bros. I remember laughing right in the face of someone that told me they had to be on Parler because āBig Techā was so liberal that they kept canceling conservatives and shadow banning them, etc.
I asked what kinds of āconservativeā things they were posting on āBig Techā that supposedly resulted in that?
This is pretty awesome. It will force people to use platforms that are ACTUALLY secure, like Signal.
Meta, in conjunction with the US government, is going to make it harder to surveil protesters. How elegant!
You attempt to use one of the instruments of your oppression against the system that wields it. That was never going to work.
No surprises as to why. Indivisible should immediately file the equivalent of an amicus brief to Brazilian courts because they are having these so-called āglitchesā with Lulaās campaign as well.
Brazil should ban everything Meta.
