1·7 days agoI use an FQDN but otherwise my setup is similar. TXT records is a great idea. I use ULAs for lan-only-IPv6 and block the connections from the ULAs to the internet and vice-versa.
meta: To control dns, e.g. route53, records there’s this nice app called dnscontrol that is available through
pkg_add. Usingenvsubstand cron DNS record registration can be automated. I’m publishing service port names as well, but that will become a blogpost at some point (when time allows)…

1·10 days agoI follow, with no small amusement, a curious play as it unfolds in Aragoste, a fictitious modest town of medieval Italy, where the Mayor, the Clerk, and the Captain of the Guard (whose mighty army numbers scarce fifty souls, each more soldier in name than deed) labour most earnestly to keep the peace between two quarrelsome houses, eager to draw swords over a matter so trifling that even the court fool might blush to speak of it.
And thus the tragedy unfolds, though with less romance and more folly! Lets see how it goes…

1·11 days agoThis is maybe a problem and maybe we should be pruning the invite tree more aggressively for people who invite strangers.
Who’s we exactly?

1·11 days agoYou need to know someone to even get an invite in most cases.
That doesn’t align with my experience. Getting an invitation here is as easy as going to the orange website and asking for one. Assuming your profile is somewhat okay, you’ll get one right away.

1·16 days agoWithout LLMs it would be simply impossible to use OpenBSD as a router for me ;-)
Now not only I do, I can for the first time connect back home without VPNs just by automating firewalls whitelisting and automatically updating SRV records :-)
Oh, I have a network flow monitoring system running on 1GB of ram RPi3. This view required 4-16GB of RAM. Ofc I can’t visualize 7 days at low resolution yet, although with prom federation enabled (as of late) might be possible :-)
I mean, it has been fun fun fun!

1·16 days agoInteresting. I never used RAID5, I’m running a ZFS storage box for 12-15 years in mirror mode and never had a problem. Even when there was faulty HDD, I had to just perform basic maintenance operation to get the system up-and-running again.

1·17 days agoI have a similar setup and here’s my restic script. However, I think that 3-2-1 is a bit of an overkill. Statistically, one local copy, especially if you drive is in mirror mode (RAID1) and one remote is more than enough.
meta: Backblaze is dirt cheap, but it’s been losing money since 2007. Isn’t that amazing, that a company can be losing money for ~19 years and still be alive and kickin because VC money? I mean, I’m happy that is cheap, but at the time I feel sorry for smaller players in the market that try to compete without advanced features like the ones AWS s3 offers.

1·20 days agoA Shepherd that will listen “Gabriel’s Oboe” or the “Lonely Shepherd” live, will be moved. It doesn’t take a trained ear to recognize greatness.
If you have to “explain” then it’s already on a different tier. If you need to explain for 40 minutes, like Pollock’s paintings at the MET then it’s just marketing…

“guests” scanning your network easily and IoT devices (kef, tv, etc) sending a report of local services to the cloud… But yeah, I think it’s worth the risk for a SOHO.
