When is meat not recalled in the US?

You guys should probably set up some sort of the government department to keep an eye on this.

This is more you should know if your in Georgia. America isn’t so tiny that this small of a recall is remotely fucking close to “if you are American”.

I got very worried for a second. But the post title is nothing but fear mongering and very misleading.

Do people not realize how fucking MASSIVE America is?

This is bad advice, fellow Americans.

Look up where the recalls and violations have happened. Also, look up the cuts of meat.

Big numbers don’t mean all of America. What a stupid suggestion.

I think the best advice is to do both: check what meat if affected and whether that might include the meat you’re looking at. If you’re not sure, maybe skip meat for a change. You can do without.

I don’t want to like Costco, but they’re making it really hard.

I don’t like being in there, I don’t like shopping in a damn warehouse. I hate the parking lot clusterfuck experience.

I do like that they curate a very good selection and they treat their employees well.

Why can’t they just run a normal-scale grocery store?!

Honestly my big Costco gripe is just that the sizes are awkward and big, but they aren’t really selling to businesses anymore… So like why? It would make sense to me if I were buying like cases or something that could be resold. I have a small family, so it’s always an exercise in creativity to use all of the produce and meat before it gets wasted. But if I bought less at a regular grocery store, I would almost always be paying more.

    • YSK California has the most stringent food safety regulations in the country, going above and beyond what the fed requires. Thank fuck I live here and not somewhere that does the bare minimum required of them (which, rn, is doing nothing at all).

Honestly I feel like that would just lead to Billionaires buying it up on pennies on the dollar and even worse outcomes.

Well it is and it isn’t. They have bought up all the packing plants creating a monopoly and an artificial constraint/bottle neck. So the billionaires set the prices which was already putting small ranchers out of business. Trump 2.0 has just exacerbated this process by making the inputs way more expensive.

The internet says the US sells appoximately 200 million pounds of meat a day based on per capital numbers. This is a big number, but drop in the bucket.

That said, they put a false inspection number on it and the recall happened because they got caught. My guess is mis labeling and not being inspected is probably more common than we know.

Do you know why they found it? Because they LOOK for that.

It’s an extremely unpopular opinion, and Trump has tried to make our safety nets worse, but the US has pretty good safety nets.

But just like anything else, good safety doesn’t mean nothing ever happens. “Safe” drivers are still involved in accidents. Airplanes are safer than cars but do occasionally crash.

We should always want more safety, but food safety in the US is still pretty damned good.

Massive cuts to air traffic control has resulted in accidents killing people.

Massive cuts and underfunding of regulatory bodies has made food more unsafe and deadly. Combined with a legislative environment that also has different pesticides, processes, growth hormones, gmos and other additives deemed unsafe for human consumption in other developed countries.

Massive cuts in foreign aid are leading to outbreaks endangering US food supplies.

(jk going vegetarian or vegan is an admirable choice even if you do it noncommittally by reducing your animal protein consumption. Every 1 gram of animal protein required ~9g of feed depending on the animal.)

Any advice on how to make tofu flavourful? I’ve been trying to use it but anytime I do, it’s more just kinda there rather than really adding anything to the flavour profile. Ironically, some of the “failures” where it all crumbled into something similar to scrambled eggs might have been one of the times where it did seem to pick up flavour, but while I wouldn’t say the texture was bad that way, I’d like to get more out of it without it falling apart if possible.

Some chefs on shows like culinary class wars put great effort into making tofu for their dishes (one guy even won the whole show with a dish like that), so I feel like there’s gotta be something I’m missing.

Lots of people on YouTube have tons of tips on ways to doctor up the taste and texture of tofu, but personally what I think it comes down to is just eating it regularly enough for it to become an acquired taste. It’s not the best absorber of flavors, sauces and marinades will only penetrate about a millimeter or two. You can get deep flavor infusion with brines, but then you’re eating a lot of sodium too.

People often recommend cutting it into smaller pieces so you’re getting a better sauce to tofu ratio. As you said, crumbling it does increase surface area and help it hold more flavors.

So just keep trying things, and keep eating it, cause eventually you will start to actually enjoy it’s own natural flavor (some brands taste better than others too). I’m at the point now where I keep it as simple as possible. Forget the unnecessary kitchen gear like presses. I take it right out of the package, maybe squeeze a little water out, and then I’ll just smash the thing and crumble it right into whatever I’m cooking.

Ah ok, that sounds consistent with what I’ve been seeing. So if I’m understanding correctly, tofu has a flavour/texture tradeoff (best texture I’ve gotten from it was once when I cut it into like 1cm slices and seared them, managed to get a decent sear on both sides without them sticking to the pan and crumbling. Actually the flavour wasn’t that bad either, that one was more simple so I think it was mostly just the tofu and the sear, plus some olive oil that infused it.

I just realized I haven’t tried marinating it yet and a quick search looks like people are saying good things about that.

I don’t make it often, but if you marinate it in something like half soy, one quarter rice wine vinegar, and one quarter mirin, then bread with corn starch, egg wash, and panko, you can make awesome deep fried tofu bites. This works well with the less dense stuff most stores carry.

It’s a gradual building process, but some perks happen very quickly. Like your whole body being in distinctly less pain - that can happen in days depending on your inflammation status. Or being super bloated because you started eating way too much fiber way too soon, that can happen in a day.

After a few years you may find your immune system starts to become superhuman. Not even joking, it’s kind of wild how much more resilient I am to sickness these days. Getting sick far less frequently, symptoms consistently becoming laughably mild, and duration is far shorter too.

I don’t think so. The processed vegan meat substitutes are almost as bad for you as the real deal, but they’re also really expensive. After a year or two of that most of us are forced to learn to cook for ourselves from scratch, and once we do that we learn that you can get way tastier / healthier / cheaper meals that way. At least, that was my trajectory.
