it would not pour, if there was no other way for air to get in
It would glug.
not in this case. if you cover one end with your finger, you could not puor out the other end. i am doing it right now with mine
with a big enough spout, yes, but with such narrow spouts it wouldn’t.
Ok, so it would be glib glugs.
Put your finger over one and you can control the flow
After I learned this I stopped using those dispensers. I don’t want to pour soy sauce through a spout that has been touched by ten thousand different unwashed hands.
Then I would never visit China ever if I were you. When I was there for 8 years, every foreigner (expat) would be vomiting non stop within the first 2 weeks, myself included. We saw people spiting on produce to make it look wet, dying spoiled grey meat to look red, people getting/skimming “gutter oil” out of trash cans and sewers to use for frying street food.
Case in point, if a finger on soy sauce is enough to make yo not use it, I wouldn’t leave the west, it only gets worse. A lot worse.
That sounds atrocious. I suppose I won’t ever eat street food there then, maybe their restaurants hold hygiene to a higher standard
??? I’ve been going there every few months for the last 2 years and haven’t gotten sick. I do know a couple foreigners who got sick, one from cross-contaminated pre-cut fruit, and one from some diner they were invited to party at. I did have mountainside-clearing farts when I went to Korea the first time tho.
people getting/skimming “gutter oil” out of trash cans and sewers to use for frying street food.
Oil does not grow in sewers and trash cans. Old oil can be stored in cans buried in the sidewalk or in bins behind the shop. That oil is recycled for industrial processes, though there was an issue where people were buying that refined oil to use in food like a decade ago.
There’s no reason to put oil in the old oil can and then take it out to reuse when you could just not take out the old oil.
The food safety isn’t great in asia as a whole, but the gutter oil thing is taken massively out of context.
On the one hand (aha) only the air vent gets touched and so the spy sauce itself should be fine. But on the other hand, a lot of bottles don’t distinguish between the air vent and the pouring nozzle and even on those that do you can guarantee that some dipshit will use them the wrong way around. Sooool, yeah. Great for home use.
Spy sauce
Two spouts, one bottle.
Air
That makes no sense. I just tried to pour out air and it’s soy sauce out of both holes.
He was talking about from the bottle.
Yes, that’s where the soy sauce is, usually.
Wow, that’s a relief! I was really worried that it might be a medical condition, and I wasn’t sure who you should even go see about something like that.
Because 3 would just be silly.
The extra hole is for pouring your unused sauce back in the bottle.
For the airflow, you can block it with your finger to control the flow
Same reason as

In case one is blocked!
Use the other side if you want to assassinate someone
All the responses that say its for air fail to explain why the air hole has to be an extra spout instead of just an air hole
To be honest, it’s reasonably ingenious and a rather old design.
Soy is strong and you need to be delicate with the dose.
recently they have screw caps and strange restrictors which let the sauce out and air in, but this predates that design. And the ones with a screw cap don’t do retention.
If they put the air hole on the top, people will try to pour through it and make a mess.
if they put the air hole on the side it’d spill out if they didn’t notice.
as far as i can thing, the only reasonble foolproof designs would be to retain the screw top lid german-style, and use one of the restrictor inserts.
But the two-spout cap, that’s cheap and easy
The spout facing you is easy to cover with a thumb or finger to control the pour flow when you only want to put a few drops.
Optimisation. Otherwise, they’d have to make separate bottles for right handed and left handed people. That way, a single bottle fits all
That’s because one is for right handed and the other one is for left handed.
Archeologist here, it’s uuuuh for ritual purposes
You guys still confused by the bone leather working tools? lol
They thought those were for rituals for a while.
I would imagine one spout pours faster than the other so you can get a little less using one side than the other. But I’ve never seen this myself so it’s just a guess.
Or maybe because it’s entirely enclosed, one is so air can get in and it pours cleanly instead of bubbling out.
You use your finger on one side to affect the flow rate.
Please don’t touch the spout on these in restaurants. If it’s your personal one, fine. But don’t do this to public ones please. Outside is dirty enough.
How do you agree what side to modulate airflow? They look identical, and swapping sides to put your grubby fingers would be gross.
And now think about these bottles sitting on the table at tons of asian restaurants.
This is what I was told as well.
Definitely for airflow.
Heh. It’s a idiot proof–okay maybe not completely–method to limit a pour. Prevents those idiot moments when you pour more than you wanted; like when you have a very nice–expensive bottle of Shoyu or Tamari.
