Which isn’t all that strange when you remember that they aren’t exactly uncorrelated.

I can’t speak for APB or The Division here since I haven’t really played them, but…
TF2 is a 19 year old game that had its niche more or less taken over by Overwatch overnight and hasn’t seen a major update in the last 9 (Jungle Inferno). Cheaters or not, it shouldn’t be surprising that people want a bit more variety than that.
Tarkov (and extraction shooters in general) seem like outliers because there’s such an immense punishment for losing. I can believe that cheating would cause serious problems there, but personally I think that’s more just down to multiplayer perma(ish)death being a bad game design.
Apex is sort of in between. I did actually play it around when they dropped the Wine support, and don’t remember perception-of-cheating being much of a problem. Then again, I only played it on a pretty casual level. But you don’t need to ruin casual access to the game for the sake of competitive players, you could do something like Counter-Strike’s VAC/FACEIT split.

Right, that must be why Deadlock and Overwatch died years ago! /s
(Not that they don’t both use anticheats too, but neither is anywhere close to as invasive as this nightmare.)

Yuck, this sets an awful precedent. And what about the games that do run fine with the old EasyAntiCheat without this draconian garbage… will they automatically regress too?

…no? There are reverse-engineered third-party tools for downloading ISOs (like macrecovery), but Apple doesn’t support officially support downloading macOS outside of their custom macOS-only tools. They do offer regular browser-based downloads up to macOS 15… but only in .dmg (again, back to either the catch 22 of need-macos-to-unpack-macos or time to use the hackintosh toys).
And once you do have the installer, macOS still won’t let you get past it either unless you have the right license key hardware dongle (motherboard).
And yes, there’s OSX-KVM to help you fake that for a VM, but it still spits on the EULA that dictates that you must only use macOS on official Apple hardware. By that claim, Windows is free because there’s hardware out there that comes bundled with OEM licenses!
But even that won’t help you now that macOS 27 doesn’t even run on any of your x86 CPUs anymore anyway.
All of this is completely unserious for a trillion dollar corporation that is asking you to do them a favour for free.

even though we tend to get compensated very well for that work - an interesting paradox!
I suspect they’re even connected… if you’re used to extreme external validation then it’s easy to neglect building up an internal sense of what or why you’re even doing.

To me, “Fine-tuning” seems like roughly the same bucket as hex-editing the binary directly. Source code or bust.

But I think that’s a somewhat different problem being solved than AI policies that are mostly trying to deal with not overloading human reviewers.
I don’t think it’s that clear-cut either. There are also projects that use the mechanical policies as an excuse to not have to have the ethical discussion (yet).

The reality is that you can run a model like a Qwen 3.8 on a laptop, and it can do plenty of real world work without you being dependent on any expensive and completely proprietary software.
Can you understand and modify that Qwen model? Can you retrain it yourself to accomodate an ever-changing world?
If not, yes, it is still proprietary. Whether or not it depends on some external website. You also wouldn’t call Windows “open source” just because you can download an ISO from microsoft.com.

They said the same thing in the announcement blog post.
