I looked over at fedinsfw and all I could think of was the titles’ attempts at being provocative or enticing and how it just seems really…lame? I’m ace so this whole subset of the site really does nothing for me.

My shower thought is just about responding to the titles neutrally.

For examples:

“Just stretching, don’t mind me”;

“oh, sorry; as you were, then. Sorry to interrupt.”

“If I sent you this by accident, what would you reply?”

“Hey I don’t think I’m the one you meant to send this to”

Asian girl waiting for your orders…

“Can I get two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip…”

Do people really get turned on by such things, or is it more that the people posting them just have to put something in the title?

It’s advertising. Clickbait. Most people are bad at it, or just emulate other people who are also bad at it. I’ve got to imagine that full screen previews negate the need for text at all.

Lmfao dude do it, I love it when people respond in a way that’s novel/interesting/silly. And honestly, as someone who loves puns because I am a big 'ol cornball, coming up with good horny-but-relevant puns is hilarious. There’s a few of us that are just in it for the fun, but Lemmy is at that awkward stage where there’s not enough engagement to make it feel encouraging for the newbies, but still enough that the big posting services feel it’s worth it to respond. Shouting out that you appreciate the non-corpo posts (and not downvoting dudes who post nudes, damnit!) does wonders for growing a nsfw community.

They are engagement bait, all over NSFW reddit as well. If you reply, regardless of it being positive or negative, they win.

Is it still really a win for them here on Lemmy where such algorithms are, to the best of my knowledge, non-existent?

No, the algorithms are always there - otherwise, there is no “feed”. It’s just that the algorithms here have no hidden weights to drive engagement towards specific topics/posts. Not that it can’t still be manipulated, but that’s often detectable behind the scenes, too.

Any intentional choice made to capture human attention functions as an algorithm.

For instance, when a creator posts an intentionally silly title, it triggers a predictable urge in users to comment on that silliness. This deliberate cause-and-effect cycle means the creator’s strategy itself is the engagement-driving algorithm. A good example of this human-designed system is ragebaiting which systematically uses manufactured outrage to multiply views and comments

Probably yes? We do have some algorithms, “sort by hot”, “sort by active”, etc, so there is value to getting to the top of those lists.

sort by scaled is my current setting. To my understanding from the description (I forgot where it’s described) it is sort by hot but taking into account the size of the community of a post and put it up more the smaller the community is.

I think so personally, because it’s still engagement and I’m assuming it probably contributes to the MAU number which could in turn attract more users

The titles are cringe. Not an ace thing, but they do need to put something down I think.

apparently there’s a ton of boomers who think that they, specifically, are the target of “would an older man still like this” posts.

The thing that makes it cringe for me is that with 99% of the people posting, it is really clear that the pics are not of them, so the “Let me know if you like what you see” title is downright pathetic.

I don’t want zero adult content on here but not at all like that, and it is close to me turning off NSFW again rather than continuing to block all the spammers.

Whenever I see one that’s obviously fishing I have an urge to reply in a contrarian way but I don’t bc that’s mean

Like “oh does anyone think my ass looks good?” No

The bigger thing is the thirst posts in replies though. Lemmy doesn’t have the traffic that Reddit has so nsfw doesn’t get nearly the engagement but it does still happen. And the goobers that reply, especially with weird parasocial bullshit, remind me that I do have an inner bully that just wants to say mean stuff to dorks

The titles like that are dumb as hell. It has nothing to do with being asexual or not. I take after all types, and still find myself wanting to slap them silly.

If you look, you’ll notice that certain accounts don’t do it. Those are the good ones, the old school gachos that just like to show themselves off and sometimes chat with the weirdos wanting to look at them.

The other ones, you’ll find, all have onlyfans links in their account infos. They spam the same picture to multiple communities, even if it’s not really a ‘fit’ for them, and always reply in the most idiotic manner. Like, no, you’re not lonely, and you’re not getting with anyone in these comments, so stop pretending like that’s what you want in your title or post body.

I vehemently disagree with the other people in this thread on being nice to those ones. Be nice to the real ones, who aren’t simply baiting, but call out the idiocy with the bad faith posters. There was one a while ago on /deepthroat, for example, that put in her title that she was practicing her deepthroating, and goddamnit, you aren’t practicing for deepthroating by doing a little suckle motion on just the tip of a tiny dildo.

It’s the simpering of a child pandering for compliments, the same energy as any kiddo thinking they won’t get told off by their mother just because they also were pitiable squalidly sitting in the ruins of their own failure. tell them off just like you would a child.

I feel bad like I should just respond in a supportive manner, because these people are putting their asses out on the line, literally.

And it’s a brave thing to do. To out yourself out there like that. But also if they just wanted to hang out, that’s fine too.

I just can’t imagine the kinds of scenarios that are implied. Such as the “if I sent this to you by accident” thing, like…in this imagined scenario, would the response be “oh, well, since I accidentally got a naked picture of you, let me hit that?” For me it would just be embarrassing for all around, even if by some stroke I did find the other person hot.
