1·10 hours agoYeah, it feels very much like the kernel community is cliquey and hard for new contributors, and their approach for dealing with slop is make it even cliquier and hard to contribute to. Considering the kernel’s manpower problems, it doesn’t strike me as a good thing.

1·6 days agoFWIW, I suspect DVD menu design might have earlier CD-ROM based efforts from i.e. Voyager (who are related to Criterion; Bob Stein founded both around the same time). Cathode Ray Dude has a good video showing some early attempts; the one for Spinal Tap has huge DVD menu energy in particular.

1·6 days agoYeah, I think this is very much a case of effort being spent where people would have preferred none at all, and I think most didn’t appreciate the effort. I remember back in the day getting DVDs instead of VHSes were annoying because of unskippable warnings and trailers. 99% of the time I also just want to watch the movie, and the 1% of the time that I care about special features or chapter select, I’m OK with something more austere.

Burying the lede: The anticheat used in Fortnite and other titles will support Linux soon. Support will be done via eBPF rather than kernel modules, and will require a measured boot with only a few trusted Linux distribution keys.
