I’ve preordered it back in … jeez, 2017? What makes the Librem5 a major improvement (imo, of course) in comparison to Android or iOS is that it is actually free software and hackable. Those security features (someone called it security-LARPing recently–I think that fits here) always felt like they are to generate more press around it, and looking at how it was covered in the relevant media, it worked.

The camera kill switch is no better than some tape.
I guess I don’t understand this gripe. How could a camera kill switch ever be substantially better than some tape?

Well it doesn’t leave glue traces on your lens, and when you remove the tape you have to store it somewhere if you want to use it again later, and the tape will eventually get dust on it and stop working. Assuming the kill switch is simple to use and can handle being toggled more than 10 times without breaking it seems like any camera kill switch would be better than some tape. I was confused by that gripe too. Your comment cracked me up, thanks.

Hackerism strikes again. Linux is not gonna save us from Google/Apple, but a serious project with focus on UI/UX, backed by little (cooperative?) manufacturers and a solid ecosystem will do. Let’s make a mobile OS for everyone, not just put Linux on the phone.
