I think you are constructing a pretty large strawman here.

Understanding how the tech works != understanding how a particular model “works” != being able to modify that particular model.

I can understand how hybrid kernel GUI-first operating systems work without understanding the entirety of Windows. Humanity can understand how nuclear fusion works without being able to build a second Sun.
