• Jobs’ quote was about manufacturing iPhones in the US. Those jobs moved to Asia, they still exist. Web design/dev still exists in the West and has coexisted with cheaper options in places like India.

Anyway, I do wonder how many people adamant that AI will replace everything are actually paying for it themselves.

      • FWIW, I didn’t see delusion in your blog post. By referencing Shaun of the Dead, a movie where “all of this” definitely didn’t blow over, you were giving us a pretty clear message that you weren’t claiming that everything is going to just return to the way it once was.

  • Would agree that learning React in this day and age is throwing away time that would be better used elsewhere. However, if you already know React there’s likely to be contract work out there for you forevermore; I got started in PHP contracting in Ages Past when that was everywhere, and I still come across the occasional posting that needs someone who knows the old magic.

In that sense, React/JSX is likely to join PHP and Cobol in the list of “tech that’ll pay you enough to come out of retirement for 3 months”.

I’m feeling so out of touch right now. What do people use for frontend these days then?

At my workplace React is and was the go-to even before the AI stuff became a thing. It’s very much not a legacy tech around here yet.

      • It is React. I’m not sure what the author’s issue is with React, but it is pretty much the standard these days.

Probably a better question is whether it’s a good fit for every project, but it’s in no way dead and tbh most web jobs for the forseeable future will almost certainly touch on React.

        • The fact that React is the “standard” doesn’t mean it is good. jQuery was the standard and React replaced it. jQuery was great and stopped being great. Same thing happened to React, first with hooks (a terrible abstraction) and later with React Server and nextjs capturing the project.

Yes, React today is bad. Terrible. Coming from someone with 10+ years of React experience and countless paid jobs.
