I love how there’s now a whole cottage industry of people capitalizing on the whole LLM outrage. It was so predictable that this would happen.

“All my enemies are paid actors” nonsense. People write because it’s an outlet to shout against the ever-growing tide of ethical and pedagogical apathy. I’m sure there are some who write to capitalise off of it, but I guarantee a majority are writing to feel heard over the incessant refrains of “it’s just a tool” and “embrace wholly or be left behind”.

It is genuinely fascinating how this always gets reframed as persecution. Nobody is burning you at the stake for having opinions, people are just tired of your performative hand-wringing. This relentless casting of oneself as a martyr for simply typing out a blog post, as if you are bravely whispering truth to power is exhausting.

What would you suggest we do instead, then, when we see our colleagues, employers, and governments turn to solutions we find unacceptable? Articulating a concern is one of the only ways to effect change when the problem is convincing others that something is genuinely wrong. Giving people the language to reject this paradigm is useful. I’m not framing your words as persecution. I’m pointing out that it is thought-terminating dismissal without actual consideration: maybe there is a reason why so many people are voicing opinions against the use of these tools. Or maybe they’re all just profiteering, like you suggest, so you can safely ignore the problems that you want to avoid considering.

So, it’s been a few years now, has articulating concern in this fashion actually effected any tangible change, what is the goal here aside from performative outrage?
And a position does not automatically become valid simply because a large number of people believe it.
Finally, nobody is ignoring or not considering anything here. The context is that this has, in fact, been considered and discussed to death at this point. But if you’re claiming that some new point that hasn’t been considered already is being made, by all means enlighten me as to what it might be.

So, your stance is, “people should simply give up and shut up, and anyone who doesn’t is just being performative”. Got it.

My stance is that perseveration is not effective at achieving anything tangible, unless of course spectacle itself is the goal.

Is there something wrong with earnestly expressing what you think is true without believing it will achieve anything concrete?
I doubt you’d have a problem with a noble-but-hopeless resistance if you believed their concerns were correct.
