• Too bad that they didn’t follow the common convention and call it the “bottom” type, because that’s what it’s called in most other language to my knowledge.

And it’s good that Rust has that type. Any language with a decent typesystem must have it. If a language doesn’t have it, well, from my perspective it’s an amateur language and a world of pain awaits you. Looking at golang for example…

    • Typescript calls it never, and IMO never makes the most sense here for how it’s typically used. “Bottom” or “uninhabited” is quite academic, and “bottom” has a sexual connotation for a lot of people, so it’d be a distracting source of memes - perhaps funny for a while, but I’m kind of glad they didn’t go with it.

“Bottom” also has another, more common sense also likely to provoke juvenile giggling: the buttocks.

It does not help with this (or, from the perspective of those who do want to giggle at it, does help) that the bottom type sometimes is notated as _|_ (an approximation of ⊥), which, given that x = (x), gives (_|_).
