Attending the Roguelike Celebration! And mostly that. We had an especially social week and our spoons are drained but in a satisfying way.
Oh! And we’re setting up our media console for the apartment. Successfully installed Jellyfin on a VM on our Proxmox NAS last night! Up next: Connecting the media so that the upcycled console can start streaming. Excited!

Just published my latest blog on Stone Tools, so it’s post-publishing admin duties, taking care of stuff that languished. Set up a new domain for the blog (stonetoolsblog.com), look into adding fullscreen controls for the videos, try to come up with a better video capture/publish workflow, start messing around with software for the next story. Plus, getting back into handwritten C, for a potential future dev project. In general, stuff to reassert (if even just for myself) the importance of human-created art, for glaringly obvious reasons.

Probably homework! I started my master’s to be certified to teach secondary school. I’m struggling a bit with:
-
Digest “fuzzy” materials. Lots of text without apparently much solid grounding. Some dude has some theories, writes them down, some other dude iterates them. But at least in the materials I’m provided, there’s not much about how effective they seem to be!
-
Writing essays with unclear directions. Esp. because right now at the beginning I’m asked to draw from personal experiences from 30 years ago. I get the same impression that I get in certain kinds of assignments in searching jobs- the person who has written the exercise has not done it, or is not describing properly what they expect to get.
But well, likely this is the initial shock, I’ll get used to it, and I’ll learn something.

Study math, try to finish my “Forth with records, built in persistence and liveview-like system” that has been bringing me so much joy lately. Basically instead of a stack you have a record and you have a record algebra.

I’m really enjoying “Sum” by David Eagleman, and as a fan of micro/short fiction, I’m reading it slowly, and taking time to write and think between “afterlives”.

Having more-or-less recovered from what turned out to be an unusually rough reaction to the covid + flu jabs earlier this week, I think I’m going to break out a Pi CM4 I have lying around and do some recreational bare-metal osdev to see if that can help me haul myself out of depression.

Continuing to do trust exercises with my dog. It’s been 3 weeks and she is not acclimated whatsoever. I am very distressed and upset about it. I thought I had made some progress last week but I took her outside (carried her because she will not move of her own volition) and it traumatized her so much all of the progress is gone. Feels like starting from 0 again.
Besides that I’ll be playing some Deadlock. Maybe I’ll do some cleaning.

I’ve kept reptiles for distressingly close to 40 years by now, and in that particular little world, building trust in just 3 weeks would be an accomplishment! (and with them, breaking trust before it’s well-established is back to 0).

I will say as someone who has fostered a lot of dogs, it can take a month or so before progress appears. My personal approach is to slow play it like I don’t care one way or the other and give some space, though obviously that doesn’t extend to not going out to the bathroom!

Awwwww, thanks for reminding me about my first days with my elderly “rescue” chihuahua (it’s complicated, her owner was a friend’s mom who’d developed early-onset Alzheimers). Just… laying on the floor relaxing next to the crate she refused leave. Bathroom time was basically picking up the crate, taking it outside, she’d scurry out to pee or poo and then run right back inside. Then one day those two little beady eyes got a little closer to the outside of the crate. Then getting a little closer before scurrying back. Then finally carefully walking up to me and laying down with her chin on my armpit. After that, completely inseparable. <3

I would’ve never in a million years chosen a chihuahua, but she chose me and it worked out :D

Road-tripping back home after hanging out with my mom for a week. The goal was to get myself re-centered and on-kilter a bit after a bit of tumultuous personal life, which hasn’t been unsuccessful, but I’ve also been reminded that I am just fundamentally kinda wobbly.
That’s okay. Despite everything, I’m still me.

Yep! That kinda recovery is a journey with its ups, down, switchbacks, and rest stops. Absolutely worth the trip, though.

I’d like to make some progress on blog articles (I have a huge backlog), after a long hiatus of not writing or doing much recreational programming at all (LLMs make it feel kind of pointless).

LLMs make it feel kind of pointless
A walk around the block isn’t going anywhere. Anything that brings us satisfaction can’t be pointless.
To wit, I feel like LLMs have increased my appetite for both writing, and reading human written content. Nothing like Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, perhaps.

huge backlog
Tell me about it! I literally have over a hundred nearly done, often more than 10 years old, just awaiting enough editing/divine inspiration to overcome perfectionism.
