Firefox has a setting to ignore target=_blank. However it will break a few sites (but that is quite rare) and I don’t think is officially supported. I love it because I always know where a link will open. (and it’s my choice!)
I should probalby add it to the post but browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external=3 (or whatever option you want) will fix that.
Although clicking notifications does still overwrite the current tab which is quite annoying, I think that is arguably a bug but I don’t have the time to make a patch right now.

Unfortunately this setting makes external app links open in the current tab too, so I had to revert.
