• I’m a Phorge lover. Been sysadmining Phabricator for about six or seven years at $WORK now, and its a great toolset and I’m always confused why I never see it crop up in the Github-exodus takes you see getting thrown around a bunch.

I do second kev009’s concern about Arcanist, though. For a long time it threw a million deprecation-warnings whenever I had to use it because system-php got ahead of Arcanist’s desired version. I have an aversion to PHP in general, and don’t really love it, but Phorge/Arc are probably the nicest PHP tools I’ve used.

Diffs are great, tickets are great, paste is great. I like how you can always reference stuff like D1245 or {T1246} or P001 and always get nice inline links and embeds. The Conduit API is pretty nice, and well documented (though it seems to have some PHP-induced JSON parsing jank). Just seems like a really well-thought-out system.

From time to time I get nostalgic about Phabricator so I decided to spin up an instance of Phorge and I have to admit I am still really into it.

Wikimedia still uses Phabricator (though they have moved their git repositories to GitLab in 2023) for project management if anyone is interested - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/

There are also some Arcanist/Diffusion tools for GitHub, e.g. - https://github.com/spacedentist/spr

    • Phorge is great; we’ve been using it (and Phabricator before it) at DeviantArt for so long, that it’s hard to tell any more whether our process evolved around Phab/Phorge or it just happened to be a natural fit.

Seeing that Wikimedia use Phab, it makes sense how we’ve had at least two (three?) devs leave DA to join Wikimedia over the years.

  • I tried introducing Phabricator at an earlier workplace. I found it amazing, but the rest of the organisation didn’t like it so much.

I self-hosted it for a while for my own projects, but back then I didn’t have NixOS so the configuration rotted and things were lost.

Now I know about NixOS so I could probably self-host it again, but … I’ve gotten into such a nice relationship with Git commits and branches through Magit that I’m not sure I could get used to an Arcanist workflow again. But I would like to. Please send help.

(Edit: maybe arc changesaless of this than I remembered … I already use the community fork of maoai, and arc seems to slot into that point of my workflow.)

  • Phorge is delightful. I occasionally spin it up from time to time, but can’t seem to quite commit to it.

The main wall I usually run into is Arcanist. I don’t like it’s installation method. I don’t like how it’s written in PHP (since PHP isn’t a language I usually program in, and don’t like having it installed as a result). I don’t like that it doesn’t have a “clean” binary installation, but that the official docs recommend clobbering the PATH (meaning that moving it is annoying). It’s a lot of small things that really add up and ultimately make me not want to use it. For their shortcomings, git forges rarely depend on tools outside of git to work (ie. I can count the times to this day I’ve used gh on one hand.)

Other than that, it’s just a really good project management system, and I do wish it was used more.
