Off and on over the last couple months I’ve been working on a k-like language. I’ve been intrigued by the APLs for a long time (particularly k, which is a kind of APL/Lisp hybrid), but all the open-source ks I’ve seen have codebases written in a dense, macro-heavy style imitating Arthur Whitney’s and it makes them needlessly difficult to extend them for problem domains I care about. (I’ve tried that programming style a couple times in C and given up on it; I’m just not buying the k-fabe.)
So, instead, I’ve been making an implementation from scratch. It’s still pretty uneven, because I’ve focused more on figuring out how to implement the novel-to-me parts, but it’s coming together. I’m not too concerned about compatibility with any real version of k, and I’ve made some different design choices (lexical scope & closures, generational mark-sweep GC rather than refcounting, tail-call optimization), but if I have time it might be sufficiently usable for Advent of Code this year. If nothing else, it’s been a good series of exercises in parsing a language with a quirky syntax, figuring out how to implement indexing in depth, designing a bytecode compiler and abstract machine for an array language, and getting to know more of the language semantics (e.g. rank).
I haven’t posted the code anywhere yet. I probably will eventually, but I haven’t released much publicly on github for a while. I really pulled back from open-source several years back because it was burning me out, and since LLMs got involved it just hasn’t been fun anymore.

Delighting in the fact that I’ve got 3 weeks of PTO ahead of me!
Apart from that, a few years ago I wrote a simulation of a slime mold based on a paper. I was a beginner programmer then, and so it was very inefficient; now that I’m looking into CUDA and generally SIMT, it seems like a rewrite is in order, so I’d like to get started on that.

Entertaining a toddler and looking forward to a new job at the end of the month. 👍 Might get some DIY time.

It is excellent imo. I recommend trying it for a month and seeing if you like it. Choose the monthly payment option - you can cancel whenever you want to.

Going to an open source halloween-themed LAN party, then C2C on Sunday night, and probably chill, write a little bit of code, play some videogames, or take a walk between those.
I managed to get my GNOME launcher almost done in the past few days! Now I just need to do better filtering with nucleo-matcher and hand off programs to systemd through D-Bus to launch them, but it’s something I’ve already done in another project so it’s just a matter of copying and cleaning up the code.
Side note: I wanted to develop this project on Codeberg, but I found that it takes a minute or so to push and pull through SSH! Am I doing something wrong?

I don’t think so, I’ve also noticed this before to the point where one time
git pushhung on me. I had to Ctrl+C and relaunch the command

Having mom over for breakfast tomorrow and my partner is leaving for a 2 week work trip on Sunday, so we will spend some time.
Also prepping my snowboard for the season since I’ll leave for my first trip next week.
And trying not to think about work, hah

Wife is away on a social jaunt with friends, so I’m taking the Boy (14) to a local tapas restaurant / bar for pizza and music, to see two local bands. The first is a duo barely older than him, and the second is a duo my age – indeed, friends of mine.
If the weather is OK, I also intend to fit two new tyres on my Laser’s launch trolley so I can take some photos and list it for sale. And clear the gutters on my house. I’m afraid of heights, but thankfully it’s a bungalow!
